Writing Experience

I have been writing professionally for over 15 years. After receiving my degree in English Literature and German from University College London, I cut my journalistic teeth at The Big Issue Magazine in 2006, investigating, researching, interviewing, and reporting.

I was part of the first wave of ethical, organic SEO writers at Adfero in 2008, providing content for a variety of B2B and B2C clients. During my time there, I covered everything from dementia care to the Global Financial Crisis on tight deadlines as well as sub-editing other writers' work. My longest-standing clients there were a large charity, a travel website, and a bank. I also wrote news about foodfashion, and many other general and specialist topics.

Freelance Writing and Specialist Topics

Over the years, I have written opinion pieces and features for New Statesman, The Royal Society of ArtsDruglink, and The Fix, and articles for The Huffington Post and various independent clients.

I naturally gravitate towards writing about my passions: mental health, addiction, and other social issues. I specialise in well-being, often blending psychology and philosophy with hard science.

I was the lead writer on professional development, businessstartups, and entrepreneurship for Directory Journal and Pakwired.

I was a regular freelance writer for Foundations Recovery Network, providing unique articles for their rehab centers and mental health websites.

I was also a regular writer for StopFryingYourBrain, providing engaging, informative articles aimed at young people facing addiction.

I have written two books on addiction and had two academic papers on the subject published by Oxford University Press.

My own business website, Smyls, became the highest-ranked website in the world for drug and alcohol addiction in 2013-4 thanks to my content, plus SEO and copywriting skills.

My media appearances page also shows you topics on which I am considered an expert. Take a look at my answers on Quora for more.

Ask Me to Freelance for You

I enjoy writing about anything that interests me, whether it be pet-sitting or politics. I know a frightening amount about nutrition and neuroscience. I like to travel and have a lot of experience of other cultures. I really enjoy looking at the world from different angles. The weird and wonderful aspects of life fascinate me.

I especially like projects where I can exercise my own voice to some extent, adding a dash of humour and wordplay to engage the reader.

I can write in British or American English. I can also communicate in French and German.

Get in touch if you'd like me to write for you. I don't take on every project, but am open to hearing about how we could work together.
